National University (Philippines)

National University (NU) is a non–sectarian and coeducational institution in Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines. The founder of the University, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson established the institution in August 1, 1900 as Colegio Filipino in Quiapo, Manila. It is considered as the first private nonsectarian and coeducational institution in the Philippines and also, the first university to utilize English as its medium of instruction, replacing Spanish language.〔
The University performed well since its foundation in 1900, it produced two Philippine Presidents, one National Artist of the Philippines, prominent legislators, politicians, business tycoons, engineers, architects, health professionals, educators, TV personalities, and well-known professional athletes which all have a great contribution in the development of the country.
Approved by the Department of Public Instruction in June 17, 1921, the University received its university status, changing the name from National Academy to National University. Senator Camilo Osias, a two-time Senate President of the Philippines, served as the first president of the University.
In 1915, with the collaboration with Lacson brothers, Don Mariano established the Philippine Law School in Intramuros, Manila. It served as the college of law of the University. It became one of the premiere law schools in the Philippines at that time, having produced one Philippine President, Carlos P. Garcia. Another Philippine President, Diosdado Macapagal also studied in the institution.
National University is one of the "Big 3", wherein it is one of only three Philippine universities recognized by the Association of American Universities (others are: the University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas). NU is also one of the pioneers of National Collegiate Athletic Association- Philippines (NCAA) and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

It is a pioneer member of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities. (PACU) Its international affiliations and memberships include the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAHIL) and the International Association of Universities (IAU).
==History==
Guided by the vision of inculcating the youth with the spirit of leadership and competence, high moral values and development of each individual into a total person through an educational process guided by the philosophy of "Dynamic Filipinism", the 23-year-old young man, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson, founded Colegio Filipino in August 1, 1900, in Quiapo, Manila.〔
According to Jhocson, this philosophy has as its guiding tenets "the internalizing all that is good in the Filipino people: warmth, hospitality , innovativeness, and a high emotional quotient that has made Filipinos renowned in service oriented industries.”
Only a handful of students at that time were enrolled in the fledgling school and they were in the elementary and secondary levels. Fueled by full determination in improving the institution, Don Mariano served as the director, teacher, and janitor rolled into one. In a span of five years, this fortitude brought Business courses (i.e. bookkeeping and accounting) in the institution. This prompted a name change as it became known as Colegio Mercantil, awarding the diploma of Perito Mercantil.〔
A short time later, Don Mariano collaborated with the Lacson Brothers and established the Philippine Law School in 1915. This later served as the College of Law of the institution. The Philippine Law School produced one Philippine president, Carlos P. Garcia and seven bar topnotchers. Another Philippine president, Diosdado Macapagal also studied at the institution but he later on transferred.〔 Don Mariano believed the discipline of law will help in training the youth for leadership and responsibility.
From Colegio Mercantil, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the institution to National Academy in 1916. Due to continuous growth of the Academy, liberal arts courses were offered and became the gateway to the other discipline that followed.
After 21 years of service in the field of education, the Board of Trustees applied for a University status to the Department of Public Instruction. Thus, after securing a permission from the department, the school became officially known as National University in January 17, 1921. The University installed, on that same day, Senator Camilio Osias, one of the respected and outstanding Filipino educators, as the first President of the University.〔
The Colleges of Education and Commerce were opened in the same year. During the following years, the Colleges of Pharmacy and Dentistry were opened in 1922. The College of Engineering, initially offering Civil Engineering opened in 1925, and the Normal School in 1930. Sanitary Engineering was offered in 1930.〔
A continuous expansion since July 1945 was observed in the University. Thereafter, Bachelor degrees in Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture and Arts were opened. Master in Sanitary Engineering was also organized.〔
Several disciplines were offered due to the needs of industry and modern technology. Computer Science was opened in 1990, Marine Engineering, Computer Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1994. College of Nursing was offered in 2004, Hotel and Restaurant Management in 2008 and Information Technology in 2009.〔
A disastrous fire broke out in January 1, 1998 and razed four buildings of the University which are the Main Building, Law and Commerce Building, Elementary Building, and Graduate School Building. The University was able to re-open its doors after three weeks of unrelenting restoration work.〔
In 2008, the SM Group of Companies acquired majority ownership of the National University. This paved way to the university's modernization efforts, which included the construction of a new campus building, one of the first school buildings in the City of Manila to have escalators. The strong support from the SM Group upgraded the institution into a higher one with improved and modernized laboratories and infrastructures, focused and committed to academic excellence.
